Gunung Palung National Park was established in 1937, as a Gunung Palung Wildlife Sanctuary, a natural and wildlife preservation areas by the extent of 37,750 ha. Pekayang Mountain, Seberuang Mountains, Labuhan Batu and their surrounding areas totally 60,000 ha, were then merged with Gunung Palung Wildlife Sanctuary in 1981. Officially, when the MoF declared the GPNP in 1990, the area decreased became 90,000 ha on the document. The Gunung Palung Technical Management Unit Office (GPNP Office) was just formed in 1998 after 8 year declared as national park.

The elevation of GPNP varies from less than 1 meter in the western coastal plain to 1,116 meters above mean sea level (MSL) in the center of the park. Highest elevation is located in Gunung Palung. It can be roughly divided into two types of topography: plain and hill. The hill areas are located in the center and western parts of the park. In GPNP there are some tourist destinations that can be promoted through the electronic media, the mass media (newspapers, magazines) for positive contributions through the coming of visitors, both from overseas and the domestic to the region’s income if it managed professionally and sustainable. The destinations that could be promoted in and around GPNP are Lubuk Baji and Batu Barat.
